The play is based on the life of a woman called Monami, who lives in a slum in Dhaka and, though not a prostitute, is forced to make ends meet through her ‘carnal’ trade. Sengupta had acted in many TV serials and films before making his feature debut with the film Muktodhara (2012).
While his first film Muktodhara was about the dilapidated housing condition of the people of Bengal, his second film, Paper, is a story about survival of a desperate family, who have left their native Kerala for a better life in Kolkata. But, when the family’s luck turns sour, the husband’s dead body is found in the running water of a canal in Kolkata with his wife and children left to fend for themselves. It is a case that would baffle even the most resourceful detective. It is a story of two lifetimes and seven changes of heart.
In a true life drama, Akkara is the protagonist. Akkara, who was also part of Muktodhara, made his debut as an actor with the Bengali film Kitano (2011), which also starred Muktodhara’s Sengupta. Q: How was it for you to begin acting as a profession and how much difference is there between being an actor and a director?
A: When I was a child, I was very fascinated by the portrayal of characters in plays and films. I watched every play and film that was being shown in our village theatre; I even memorised the characters and acted in their parts. I never thought of becoming an actor or director and I was, and still am, a perfect fit for the profession. I do not hesitate in front of a camera, I am extremely comfortable on stage.
